About this tool
A percentage expresses a number as a fraction of 100 — it's one of the most common ways to compare proportions, whether you're calculating a discount, a grade, an interest rate, a tax, or a survey result.
This calculator handles the two most common percentage questions people search for: "what is X% of Y" (for example, working out a 20% discount on a $50 item), and "X is what percent of Y" (for example, figuring out what portion 45 correct answers out of 60 represents).
Percentages are useful precisely because they're scale-independent: saying you scored "27 out of 30" and someone else scored "90 out of 100" doesn't make it obvious who did better, but converting both to percentages (90% each) makes the comparison instant.
Worked example
- 1Choose which question you're answering: "What is X% of Y?" or "X is what percent of Y?"
- 2For "What is X% of Y?": divide X by 100, then multiply by Y. Example: 20% of 50 → (20 / 100) × 50 = 10.
- 3For "X is what percent of Y?": divide X by Y, then multiply by 100. Example: 45 out of 60 → (45 / 60) × 100 = 75%.
Formula
What is X% of Y? → (X / 100) x Y. X is what percent of Y? → (X / Y) x 100

Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
- Divide the percentage by 100, then multiply by the number. For example, 10% of 100 is (10 / 100) x 100 = 10.
- How do I find what percent one number is of another?
- Divide the first number by the second, then multiply by 100. For example, 25 is 25% of 100 because (25 / 100) x 100 = 25.
- What does 'percent' actually mean?
- Percent comes from the Latin "per centum", meaning "per hundred". A percentage is simply a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100, which makes it easy to compare proportions of different sizes.
- How do I calculate a percentage increase or decrease?
- That's a slightly different calculation from finding a percentage of a number — use our dedicated Percentage Change Calculator, which compares an old and a new value directly.
- Can percentages be more than 100%?
- Yes. A percentage over 100% simply means the value is more than the whole it's being compared to — for example, a company growing sales by 150% means sales are now two and a half times what they were.
